Description
This is the first time I’ve worked with the famed Czech painter, Alphonse Mucha. In the past, I’ve always favored the Pre-Raphaelites or Impressionism – but my need to challenge myself and stand alone in the field has forced me to take a much broader approach to art. For this, I am thankful.
The antique buffet was quite a lovely piece to begin with, but it seems a mismatch of competing veneers. To honor its ‘original’ form, I listed it for sale ‘as-in’. This was my litmus test. If it didn’t sell, I would give it a rebirth. And her she is.
The prints are from The Seasons. Because of the timing of this piece, I choose Summer and Autumn. It seemed fitting. A transition.
Because the prints are quite vivid (lots of beautiful oranges), I wanted the painted background to be that – background (although, honestly, it probably took me just as look to get this muted, subtle finish as my other finishes). And to honor the Art Nouveau art I choose copper leaf for the moldings.
Every morning, I woke up with different versions of how this piece should be. And I’d revisit it, and quickly change my mind. This is probably why I always hold myself back and not rush the pieces. I really think the organic approach works: Let the piece tell you what it wants to be.
It’s a very different piece for me, but there’s a lot that stills feels like me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I’ve loved creating it.
The more mundane details about this piece: It’s a very structurally solid piece of furniture. I removed the door handles because I didn’t want to compete with the images – because the doors have a large overhang they can be easily opened. I will be more than willing to add handles if required. All of my pieces are created to look authentically old and worn; you will find that the finish is purposefully aged and a beautiful patina around the copper leaf is very evident. Buffet measures approx: 55″ Wide x 20″ Deep x 36″ High (plus 6″ for the top detailing).
