Description
Where to begin describing this piece? OK, let’s start with the basics: it’s a solid cabinet manufactured by Berkey & Gay. It has two solid wood shelves, and one functional drawer. At one point, there would have been a key to open the right side door. Sadly, I don’t have the key – but the door does open with a small gold-leafed knob. There are dings and dents in the wood, a little missing molding. Because I want my pieces to look ‘original’ and ‘authentic’, I purposely leave the signs of age. None of my pieces are ever perfect.
Now the good stuff! It’s simply beautiful. I used a painting by the famed L.S. Lowry (a fellow Northerner). It depicts a coastal (seaside, if we’re going to use the local vernacular) scene. I find it incredibly calming and light. When I begin the process of choosing the images that I’ll use on a piece, I really start with my mindset. Recently, I’ve been thinking and missing that chance to visit home (the UK) and the need for calm and light. When I saw ‘On the Sands’ I knew I wanted to work with it. It’s light, cheerful, and reminiscent of bygone days. Perhaps, a simpler time.
The main body is a soft taupe neutral, and I married that with a light soft pink. It’s a gorgeous combination. Neutral enough for any color scheme. The wood moldings have been gold-leafed and are now an aged, muted gold. The piece has been aged with glazes and textured to give the appearance of authentic patina.
As with all of my pieces, I hope to create a stand alone piece – one that will start a conversation in the room. This piece will bring you in, invite you to experience life in England at the seaside. Could anything be more tempting?
(back to the boring stuff). Shipping can be arranged within the US for an additional fee. It is NOT included in the listing price. If you are interested in shipping, please contact me with your zip code. I will work to get a reasonable quote to you. Local pickup from Portland, Oregon is greatly appreciated. All sales are final.
(an exciting tidbit). I am currently working on a step-by-step tutorial based on this piece. It will be available for purchase at a later date.
As always, thanks for stopping by!
