In Thanks

We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in England.

Most English folk would probably surmise that

“it’s because we’ve nothing to be thankful for”.

Although  that’s not necessarily true. We have lots of things to be thankful for – we’re just a little shy to admit them. It’s the English way).

Although I enjoy Thanksgiving, my olfactory senses still equate Turkey with Christmas Day (the traditional English Christmas dinner).

But Thanksgiving really is about celebrating tradition.  And England prides its self on its staunch sense of tradition.

I started to think about what traditions we would celebrate about this time of year in England.

The only example that comes close is our Harvest Festival (usually around the Autumn Equinox).

It’s a celebration of the Earth’s gifts to us, and has probably been around since Pagan times.

As a child, I remember singing hymns about the Harvest and bringing in canned food to school.  It would later be shared within the community to those ‘in need’.

Such songs  remind me of community and of sharing.

Mostly if reminds me to appreciate the Earth. It just keeps on Giving.  (Regardless of how much we try to mess it up).

This is truly a crazy time for everyone.  There’s a madness in the air, that seems so hard to shake or make sense of.
But we’re here. For today.

And that’s kinda priceless.

I just want to grab life with both hands and run with it.

So, I wish you a Happy Today! And I hope you get to share the most simplest of gifts: Time spent. A bountiful harvest. Today.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Diane
