Description

Hand painted vintage radio cabinet, featuring art by French painter, Henri Fantin-Latour ‘Roses 1883’.

Long after they’ve served their original function, radio cabinets are usually stripped of their radios and discarded. Perhaps they’re seen as an empty shell, no longer useful – maybe even ‘unsightly’? I’ve been in love with these pieces of furniture for years; and I’ve been fortunate enough to bring many back to left, sans radio equipment. The serve as beautiful reminders of an age gone by; a time when families gathered in front of the radios waiting to hear the latest news and songs.

The radio of this little cabinet had long been removed. The mechanism centering the doors had also been removed (meaning that you have to manually center the sliding doors), this, however, does not impact the overall condition of the piece. It’s still quite stable, and because there no longer is a radio inside it is quite lightweight, and thus easy to move.

My goal refinishing this piece was to showcase the beautiful French painting. I also wanted to preserve the beautiful birdseye veneer. I wanted it to look delicate, yet time-worn. It’s also important to me that the image appears to be original to the piece. I never want my pieces to look refinished and fresh. I like to embrace texture, and patina – signs of a life lived well.

For this piece, I choose muted mauves and yellows – feminine, yet quite strong. While it’s quite a traditional piece, I think it will look at home in many styles of home, from traditional to French Country to Contemporary. While there is a small area inside for storage, the main function of this piece is to be a focal point in a room. It’s an incredibly beautiful piece.

Measurements are approx: 27″ Wide x 47″ High x 14″ Deep.

Local pickup from Portland, Oregon is always welcome. If you require shipping I will be more than happy to find you a reasonable quote.

As always, thanks for stopping by!
